Hines was selected by Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) as facility manager for the utility's headquarters complex in downtown San Francisco. PG&E occupies a full block on Market Street, directly across the street from 101 California.
The 1.5 million-square-foot complex consists of a 32-story office building, a 500-space parking garage, a 600,000-square-foot, 16-story historic office building, which was renovated by Hines, and a 24-hour critical computer operations center which is the nerve center for PG&E's northern California energy production and distribution.
Hines was charged with ensuring that the landmark PG&E buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places upon completion. This enabled PG&E to recover 20 percent of the project costs through a federal rehabilitation tax credit.
